They had lifted off from Presque Isle, Maine, on 11 August. The flight became the first time a crewed free balloon crossed the Atlantic and landed safely on the far shore. Ben Abruzzo, a New Mexico businessman and balloonist, had already risked Atlantic projects and knew how thin the line was between headline and rescue.
