From based as “founded on,” then from 1980s-90s US slang around “freebasing,” later reclaimed and flipped in internet culture (notably via the rapper Lil B’s positive “based”) into general approval.
History
The path is messy: chemical slang, then ironic and sincere praise. On forums and social apps, based often marks a comment as bravely correct or refreshingly direct. It can praise courage or simply signal in-group agreement. People search it when a reply says “based” with no further explanation.
