From Greek esōterikos (inner), from esōterō (further inside), used for teachings reserved for advanced pupils.
History
Greek schools marked some lessons as esoteric, for those already inside the circle. English kept that sense for mysticism and then for any specialized field. Code, theory and hobby lore can all be esoteric without being mystical. The word still draws a line between the few who get it and the many who do not.
