On this day: the September 11 attacks

On the morning of 11 September 2001, 19 hijackers linked to al-Qaeda seized four U.S. passenger jets. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 struck the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought back. Nearly 3,000 people were killed.

The attacks remain the deadliest terrorist strike in modern history. They shut down U.S. airspace, collapsed the towers and Building 7 and forced a generation of security, war and public-memory debates that still shape politics in the United States and far beyond.

The plot had been years in preparation. Operatives trained, secured visas and chose long-haul flights with full fuel loads. Investigators later tied money, camps and communications to al-Qaeda’s leadership under Osama bin Laden. The 9/11 Commission Report remains the clearest public narrative of how warnings were missed and how the day unfolded minute by minute.

Aftermath arrived in layers: rescue and recovery at Ground Zero, wars in Afghanistan and later Iraq, the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and lasting arguments over surveillance, detention and the balance between safety and civil liberty. Health effects from toxic dust continue to add names to the victim rolls years later.

On the anniversary, the useful habit is still the same. Keep the timeline accurate. Keep the names and rescue stories at the center. Refuse conspiracy claims that recycle old falsehoods. Memorials in New York, Arlington and Shanksville hold the public record when politics gets loud.
