Apple unveils iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone

Apple has formally introduced iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. Announced on 9 September 2026, the device pairs a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display with a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR panel that Apple calls the largest display ever on an iPhone. Closed, the phone is meant to feel pocketable and close to passport size. Opened, it is aimed at multitasking, reading, gaming and video without carrying a separate tablet.
US pricing starts at $1,999 for 256GB. Storage climbs through 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Finishes are Star White and Night Sky in grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished enclosure. Pre-orders open Friday 16 October at 5 a.m. Pacific in more than 70 countries and regions. Availability begins Friday 23 October, with a second wave of markets following a week later according to Apple’s rollout notes.
Both displays share the same aspect ratio so content scales when you open or close the device. Apple lists ProMotion, Always On and up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness on both panels. The inner display uses a nano-texture finish meant to cut glare and soften crease visibility. A FaceTime camera sits under that inner panel and stays hidden until needed. Apple says Apple Pencil support over USB-C arrives later this year for notes and markup on either screen.
Under the hood is the new A20 Pro chip with a vapor chamber and a dual-battery design. Authentication uses Touch ID in the side button and can also unlock with Apple Watch. Camera Control returns, including a Siri Camera mode that can respond to what the rear cameras see. The rear setup centers on 48MP Fusion Main and Ultra Wide cameras with an optical-quality 2x telephoto path on the main sensor, plus Center Stage on the front.
The foldable design adds camera modes that slab iPhones cannot match. Smart Take uses on-device models to capture a shot when subjects are ready. Duo Preview puts a live view on the outer display so the subject can see framing. Kid Cue plays short animations on the cover screen to pull a child’s attention. Duo FaceTime lets someone nearby join a call on the outer display instead of crowding one panel.
Durability is the make-or-break story for any foldable. Apple rates iPhone Duo IP68 for splash, water and dust resistance, uses Ceramic Shield on the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer front and describes a hinge built from more than 100 parts with magnets for a firm close. The inner stack uses multilayer glass and adhesives that are supposed to flex like book pages. Those claims will face real tests once units leave review desks and enter pockets, bags and repair queues.
Software will decide whether the hardware premium feels justified. Apple is pitching iOS 27 layouts that adapt when Duo is open, including side-by-side apps and hands-free propped FaceTime. Buyers coming from a Pro Max will notice the larger canvas immediately. Buyers coming from Samsung or Google foldables will judge windowing, keyboard comfort and how often apps still look like stretched phone layouts.
At $1,999 before tax, Duo sits near the top of the foldable market. Reporting around launch put Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 a little under that sticker and the Fold 8 Ultra a little above it. A non-folding iPhone 18 Pro Max remains far cheaper if you only want Apple’s cameras and chip in a familiar slab. Financing, trade-ins and carrier deals will matter more than the list price for many shoppers.
What to watch next is supply, crease behavior in daylight and AppleCare pricing for the inner display. Hands-on reviews after 23 October will tell you more than the keynote about hinge feel, battery life with the panel open and whether multitasking sticks in daily use.
